LANDMARK TEAM SHIFTING FOCUS TO EVERQUEST NEXT

Still no release date on either game.

BY MICHAEL MARTINDaybreak Games is shifting its development priorities from one MMORPG to another. The developer formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment will focus on more important tasks and systems forEverQuest Next, resulting in less updates for Landmark.

According to a blog post on the Landmark site, the changes will not move EverQuest Next's release window up.

EverQuest Next Dev Explains Why Free-to-Play is Good

"As the team has wrapped up the various pieces related to the wipe and the bugs associated with it, we have been shifting our focus and resources over to work on the highest priority tasks and systems that will be used in EverQuest Next," Senior Producer Terry Michaels said. "While we do this, we're working in areas with high amounts of creative risk. This means that while we know what we want to do, we know it will take an unknown amount of iteration, tweaking and sometimes drastic direction changes to get these in game and working the way they need to."

Michaels assures users that Landmark content is still forthcoming. It will just come on an irregular schedule when its in "a state fit." The developer will also continue to seek feedback from users on the more traditional MMORPG EverQuest Next and the MMORPG sandbox game Landmark.

"Landmark and the player community are very important to us and will continue to be essential in the development of EverQuest Next, exactly as we've promised from the very beginning."

A screenshot (seen below) was released showing Qeynos, one of the starting cities in the original EverQuest, apparently using player creations.

Daybreak Games will continue its Workshop series of videos and is planning a Landmark Live when it has more to update.

Neither Landmark nor EverQuest Next have release dates. Both games are releasing on PC and EverQuest Next will be coming to PlayStation 4.

Earlier in the year, SOE, developer of the long-running EverQuest series and H1Z1, was purchased and rebranded to Daybreak Games Company. Sadly, the independent developer was hit with layoffs about a week later.
