Battlefield 3 Multiplayer classes: Snipers get a more active part, Medic merged with Assault

The Battlefield series has always been known for one thing and one thing only: Multiplayer. Even the Bad Company series, which tried bucking the trend and adding a single-player element to the game, was the success that it was because of the multiplayer it offered; the single-player, though not condemned by critics and gamers, was not the subject of praise.

DICE recently revealed the changes they were brining into the multiplayer this time around, through the Battlefield 3 Blog, and the result seems to be a more precise, compact and balanced multiplayer experience.

There are now only four classes as opposed to the five choices players had in the Bad Company multiplayer.

Assault Class

In previous games, the Assault class was less of a team player and was in more ways than one a lone-wolf class. Now however, DICE have changed all of that by merging the Assault class with the Medic.

According to the Battleblog, “All the abilities such as medkits and defibrillators typically found on the Medic class are now incorporated into Assault.”

The move seems sensible enough, seeing how the Medic and the Assault class were similar, yet DICE also acknowledged that not every player would want the burden of being a medic and it gave players, who opted for the Assault Class, a choice.

As the Battleblog put it, “Remember, you can play it your way, so if you want to customize your Assault soldier more towards medic abilities or towards serious gunplay, it's totally up to you.”

It simplifies things a great deal for gamers and so far DICE seem to be on the ball.

Recon Class

The class that can bring immense satisfaction and agony at the same time, the Recon (Sniper) class has always been considered a lone-wolf, selfish class. This is due to the fact that snipers in previous Battlefield titles would focus more on getting their killcount up without focusing on helping the team complete its objectives.

DICE seems to want to change that, “we've built several completely new team-play oriented gadgets specifically for the Recon class so he can be a team player.”

So it seems snipers will be more helpful to their team as well as more directly involved in the fight. That is two out of two for DICE for the improvement.

Engineer Class

The Engineer is another class which falls under the support class category and is able to repair friendly vehicles and armour as well as deal out destruction on enemy heavy artillery with his RPG.

This time around the Engineer has more balance about him as instead of a shot gun, players will be able to equip themselves with a mid range rifle. Though we here at Bettor.com think that DICE put it perfectly when they stated, “an Engineer’s arsenal includes Carbine weapons, you get an extremely versatile multiplayer class that can truly move like a butterfly and sting like a bee.”

The Engineer will also be able to bring down entire buildings and cover which the enemy may be using.

However, Bettor.com seems to find the change in weapon selection for the Engineer a huge improvement as it allows the class to be more than just cannon fodder.

Support Class

The support class in Battlefield 3 seems to focus on a new gameplay dynamic which DICE have introduced in the game: Suppression. Giving players a Bipod, and a 200 round magazine has been added to the advantage of this new feature.

According to DICE, “You'll be able to unload an entire clip of 200 bullets from your LMG with great accuracy without even letting go of the trigger.”

The Support class will actually get points for suppressing an enemy position, whereas the player who is pinned down will feel he is trapped and confused thanks to the in-game mechanics.
