Battlefield 3 PS3

EA developer DICE came under scrutiny this week when several shooter fans noticed that the latest console footage of Battlefield 3 didn’t appear to include the same drastic destructible environments that the heavily advertised PC version has proudly displayed. The conclusion to many was that the console versions of the upcoming product wouldn’t support the new and improved Frostbite 2.0 engine. Thankfully, these rumors are far from the truth.

In quick fashion, Senior Gameplay Designer Alan Kertz shot down the rumblings that console versions of Battlefield 3 won’t operate on the impressive Frostbite 2.0 package. He posted the following:

Bulls*** confirmed. Frostbite 2.0 is the engine running the game on all platforms!!

Battlefield 3 will be the first title ever to feature Frostbite 2.0, and so far it’s looking fantastic. Some of its features include tile-based deferred shading acceleration, radiosity, MLAA and, best of all, bigger and better explosions than ever seen before. The destructible environments in Battlefield Bad Company 2 not only injected some intense moments into the experience, but provided a counter to camping as well (something Call of Duty has struggled to balance). Considering that title was running on an older version of Frostbite called 1.5, we can only imagine what the new additions will do for both the campaign and competitive modes.

DICE’s Battlefield 3 is still on-schedule for a release on October 25th for North America, and October 28th for Europe.
